Illegal Art

Categories: ArtLifeMoviesMusic

I have always found banned books rather interesting.  One of my favorite children’s authors (Judy Blume) has had a number of her books banned at various school districts throughout the US.  Obviously I’m not the only one who finds books that have been banned as interesting.  Powell’s a giant bookstore in downtown Portland has a week every year dedicated to promoting books and authors who have been banned for one reason or another.

As an artist as well as an avid reader I was pleased to find this website dedicated to audio and visual art that had been banned or deemed illegal for one reason or another.  Some of it, of course, is rather tasteless.  However, some of it is quite witty and appropriate for its target.

I strongly suggest checking it out if you are into that sort of thing.

I will be back in Sitka for the week of Christmas.  My job has been quite interesting.  I was also approached to produce a website for an art gallery for one of the people who work with me.  You will see that in my portfolio soon should something come of it.

I’m also working on a redesign of my entire site.  This site was my very first attempt at creating a standards based website using XHTML for the content and using CSS for the visual presentation.  I was very pleased with it in terms of a first attempt.  Yet in terms of the visual look, this site is just an evolution of my old one which was entirely Table based.

The new design will take much better advantage of CSS.  It will attempt to completely separate the presentation from the content (Something I basically failed to do with the site as it is currently), and every page will validate.  More importantly from an artistic standpoint, the new site will have a completely different look and feel.

These are of course just my goals as I start out on this.  Hopefully I can make good on them.

If I don’t post again before Christmas I just hope everyone who happens by has a wonderful Christmas.
