Turning Twenty-Seven
Categories: Books • Life • Technology
Another birthday has come and gone.
Four days ago (on the 11th of August) was my twenty-seventh birthday. I’m getting closer and closer to thirty which for some reason or other scares the crap out of me.
I think I quit enjoying birthdays around the time I turned eighteen or nineteen.
There was no Egg’s Benedict this time around but I did have a nice dinner at a Thai restaurant with Jennifer. And then a bunch of friends attempted to surprise me at my friend Elbert’s house. That was nice. It is nice to have friends.
I haven’t posted much lately which is a sure sign I’ve got things to do. I’m in the process of starting a new company. At the same time I’m teaching myself PHP using the latest Oreilly book on the subject, Learning PHP 5. The book is very good and written in a way that I have so far found to be extremely clear and well thought out. I’m not typically inclined towards real programming and I’ve been surprised at how well I’ve understood most of it. Still, Chris and Elbert have both bailed me out of numerous problems I’ve come across.
Once the new business starts to progress I’ll be posting more about it. There is a lot of work to get done first though.
Speaking of work to do…

hey! happy birthday man. ah, 27 ain’t so bad. sounds like you’re just a couple months behind me so i feel ya (march for me). for my 27th, i think i just sat at home with the wife and watched a flic. just being able to relax was a gift all in itself. (she grabbed a babysitter for the kids). uneventful really, but very nice.
so, give us a hint on this company man… spill some beans. and teach me php when you learn it!
heh.

Yeah, I know. Twenty-seven isn’t really that old. I always get grouchy around my birthday. :)
I’ve actually been contemplating making some posts on PHP basics since that would likely help me think through what I’ve learned. I’ve just had so little free time lately. I don’t know how people who are married do it.
As for the company...it is internet related of course. But I don’t want to say much right now. I’m still somewhat worried it will all fall apart before anything comes of it.
The two guys who are doing it with me (the ones I mentioned as helping me with my PHP problems) are both great so I think we have the talent. We just need to be able to sustain our momentum until we have something to actually sell.
But I’m only twenty-seven right? And I’m not married. I can afford to fall flat on my face a few times. :)

Happy 27th! I’ll be 26 this year (yikes). Anyway… Good luck on the biz. And PHP rocks! You will not be sorry that you took the time to learn it!

Hi, Jamie. I knew about you from the Vine. Hey, I share your concern about nearing 30! LOL. I also had my 27th last March, like Evan. I think, for me, the anxiety stems from not really having accomplished as much as I expected. But God is in control. Take care!

Thanks for the comment Cristi. It is nice to know I’m not alone in my fear of the quickly aproacing oldness that waits for us all. :)

Hey Jamie,
Your mother says you are the most incredible son any parents could have. As you know your Mother is always right.
You are an inspiration for your much older father (45:)
Love,
mom & dad
