T-Shirts
Categories: Other News
I am interested in doing some T-Shirt designs using the Matt and Leigh drawing I made for the header of the new site. I am wondering if people’s interest in such a thing would make it worthwhile. Basically I want to know if people are interested at all (Let me know through the comments on this entry).
I have no plans to have “Methnen’s Mess” anywhere on the shirt. I also have no plans to make money off them. I was thinking I would sell them through Cafe Press and either make the price the same as it costs to make the shirt (so I would be making no profit) or else have it marked up three or four dollars and have the proceeds go to The Global Fund an Aids relief organization. This would give it some connection to Sixpence/DATA.
Please give me your ideas for colors to use or song quotes to put on the shirts (Or not if you would rather it just be the picture). I could also draw more of the members besides Matt and Leigh. The background behind the drawings could be blue or purple or pink or… One nice thing about Cafe Press is that I could do multiple designs and it wouldn’t cost me more to make them all available.
I’m open to the donations being to a different organization, The Global Fund was simply the first one that came to mind. I’m just looking for ideas so send them my way.

I think it would be a cool idea… I think a “Kelly” Green shirt would be good… maybe with “Sixpence” below? I think it would be sweet if you could keep it below $10 shipping included. You should be able to get the shirts printed for around $5.

one other thing… i’d go with 50% Cotton 50% Polyester shirts… they are a little thinner and fit better…

Gavin/Daddy (That is you right?),
If I go through Cafe Press it might be a bit more expensive but I’m strongly leaning that way if I do this. The main reason being I don’t have to have a certain number of shirts printed. Cafe Press will make the shirts on demand which means people will be able to pick the kind of shirt themselves so I can potentially please everyone (As impossible as that is) and not be left with a bunch of shirts in sizes I don’t want because I misgauged interest. :)

I love the drawings the way they are, and the green, too. I also like the lyric “sad but true.” ... though i also like the idea of seeing the words “beauty never sells”
on a t-shirt. :)

I’d love a new “Vine” inspired 6p t-shirt. Can we go with another color besides green though. The last one we made on the vine was deep green. Perhaps burgandy? Or a deep red.

I’m open to using different colors. I think I might make a dark green, dark red (Isn’t burgundy dark red?) :), and dark blue one on a white shirt. Or maybe some multiple versions on colored shirts too? Gosh I don’t know.
I like the idea of having “beauty never sells” as well. So fitting. So maybe multiple choices for quotes as well. I can already tell I’ll probably end up spending way too much time on this.
I’m glad to hear that people like the idea though. I’ll come up with some mockups over the next week or so and post them for people’s input. For now I’ll just continue to wait and see how many people are interested.

Well I’ve done a little more research. Apparently I only have two choices if I want to go with shirts made on demand. They both have drawbacks.
CafePress uses digital transfers for their t-shirts. That means color choices for the prints are almost limitless which is cool. The drawback is that it can only be printed on white shirts and digital transfers apparently aren’t as durable. They are similar to those iron on transfers that you may have gotten when you were little.
The other choice is SpreadShirt which uses Plot Printing which basically means they cut the design out of the colors you want used using a computer controlled knife. Plot Prints are as durable as silkscreening and there is no transfer junk around the edges of your design. Also Plot Prints can be put on colored shirts just as easily as white ones. The drawback is that Plot Prints are more expensive and for some reason SpreadShirt appears to only use American Apparel t-shirts which are nice but most definitely not cheap since they pay their employees fairly and all that.

If you coudl come up with a color and design (i’d say that since you are the one doing that you just decide...after some time fo feedback or voting by the folks) Then you could just do a “pre order.” It might tak a bit longer for the shirts to arrive if you have everyone order first, but my guess is that folks around hear are pretty used to waiting… :)

To clarify, after the pre-order you could then just have the shirts screen printed. That might be the cheepest? I order a bunch of shirts now and then And my gues would be that if we could get at least 24 shirts ordered then we might could find a place that could do it for somehwere close to 5 or 6 bucks…

i’d go for the spreadshirt idea. i’m open to paying a few bucks more for a nicer shirt.
i also like the idea of ‘beauty never sells’ on the shirts. very cool.

hey jamie,
if you need any help with the collection of funds/mailing/whatever in regards to the t-shirts, let me know.
though, i’m not sure how much help i could be being 4 hours up the road from you.
just wanted to let you know i’m willing to help, if needed. :)

I know, I know I need to get on this. I’ve just been really busy. I’ve got to finalize a few designs first so people have something to choose from then I’ll go with everyones favorite.
Thanks for the offer of help Joshua. I actually don’t think I will need it though because of how SpreadShirt works (yes I’m going with it as opposed to silk screening simply because I really don’t have the time). People will purchase the shirt through SpreadShirt so they will handle the billing, creation, and shipping I just need to set it all up and make sure my design is workable with their plot cutter.
I’m also just going to sell them for cost mainly because I’ve been so busy lately I’m worried I’ll never get around to sending any profit to a charity. :)
I’ll do my best to get some designs finished up this weekend for people to see.
