A friend of mine asked me to help with a Promotional Poster for his sketch comedyy group here in Portland. The photo used in the design was not taken by me. The rest of the design however, is the product of my efforts. The sketch group has a tradition of using comic themed show names and poster designs. I carried on the tradition. More information on Superego can be found at Ego Productions.

I submitted the original version of this design to the contest for Whale Fest 2004. The committee who was assigned to choose the design apparently wanted to choose this one out of the submissions. However, since it contained elements of Tlingit design they wanted to make sure it was fine with the tribe in Sitka. There wasn’t time to do that before the Whale Fest conference so my design was not chosen.
I was asked to resubmit it for 2005. Since I had some time I made some variations variations based on the committee’s comments on the design. The variations include a version with a border and mirrored version with the whale jumping into the water rather than out. On the versions with a boarder I also changed the look of the water a small bit.
My preference is still the original version without a border and with smooth water.
This is a design that I was really quite happy with in terms of my success in achieving what I wanted with design. From conception to the finished product it turned out basically exactly like I planned. Not something that always happens as many artists can tell you.
If you want to know/read more about this design check out my blog entry that shows how I went about creating it.

This poster was created to promote a new Jazz Festival in Southeast Alaska.
The design went through numerous revisions over a month until this final version was finished. It was done as a favor to my former high school music teacher.
